Exploring Indian Miniature Painting and Siyahi Qalum Paintings
I am an artist who has been passionately creating art using different techniques for over three decades. My roots are in India, and I find myself drawn to the rich tapestry of Indian art, where tradition and innovation intertwine. Thus, as main themes for the graduation works this year, I have chosen to delve into distinctive yet harmonious realms of Indian miniature painting, and Siyahi Qalum (Pen and Ink paintings).
In this exploration, I seek not only technical mastery but also a deeper connection—to the past, to the present, and to the soul
of my creativity. My personal favourite is the Siyahi Qulam style of work. These are a genre of paintings or drawings in pen and ink, also known as Qalum-siyāhi. They are attributed to a painter, or a group of painters known as Siyah Qalum or the Master of the Black Pen. These paintings date from the late 14th and early 15th century and are mostly preserved in the albums at the Topkapi Palace Library in Istanbul.
They depict various scenes of cultural and religious significance, nomadic life, demons, monsters, animals, and fairy-like beings, influenced by Turkmen, Chinese, Persian, and Mongolian art. The themes of my work relate to sacred beings across cultures which embody various symbolic meanings.
The Phoenix is said to represent hope, peace, compassion, harmony, and renewal. While in some cultures, the olive branch carried by a dove represents a message of peace, in my painting, the olive branch the Phoenix carries within its beak is an answer to the prayers of millions impacted and displaced by war. This painting is my dedication to the mothers of the world who reside in strife-ridden regions who live in hope of peace. The Phoenix is painted in miniature style with traditional pigments on handmade Nepali canvas. The surface is prepared with materials including animal skin glue, cotton fabric and clay.
The Siyahi Qalum paintings depict The Lion, The Bull, The Elephant, Sufi saint-Chishti and the Prince and The Sadhu in meditation. These paintings are on handmade tea-stained paper using walnut and soot ink; painted with a squirrel and cat hairbrush.
The Dragon ink paintings are on Vellum and traditional Chinese calligraphy scrolls.
The Peacock, The Mendicants, Arawat, The Ashram Scene, The Sadhu in meditation are painted in miniature style on paper using traditional pigments. These small-scale works come alive through vibrant hues, delicate brushwork, and graceful forms.
The Unicorn has been painted on a traditional Chinese calligraphy scroll using walnut ink with a gentle wash of traditional pigment. This is expressed in the ‘neem rang technique.’ This technique appeals to me because of its delicate, gentle layering and soft palette of colours where the tonal values have been carefully built up.
Through the intricate strokes of Siyahi Qalum, I have discovered a dance between profound serenity and euphoria. The seed, now nestled in the canvas, awaits its vibrant bloom.
Biography
A Lifelong Artistic Odyssey:
Bridging Tradition and Contemporary Expression
I have been practicing a variety of art over the past three decades embracing both time-honoured and modern techniques. My artistic voyage began under the tutelage of renowned masters—from Flemish Art to Icon Painting, Pastels, and Egg Tempera—at the King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts in London. Additionally, in France, I delved into Classical Naturalism with Ted Seth Jacobs and Studio Escalier.
Currently, my practical research unfolds at the School of Traditional Arts in London. I am passionate about preserving and carrying forward traditional methods. I specialize in Siyahi Qalum (pen and ink), Indian and Persian miniatures, oil painting, charcoal, pastels, gilding, and egg tempera on gesso panels.
In the past, I have collaborated with interior designers and architects and have works of art in several hotels, restaurants, offices, and residences around the world. Each stroke of mine echoes tradition, yet my canvas dances with the contemporary spirit.
