About
Inspired by the intricate geometry of the Alhambra, this course explores how repeating patterns and geometric forms can be translated into the traditional craft of wood parquetry. Participants will learn how to transform these patterns into a carefully constructed wooden composition.
Throughout the course, participants will learn the complete process of creating a parquetry piece, from selecting and preparing the wood to developing the design, accurately cutting and assembling the individual elements, and applying the final finish. Through hands-on making, they will develop an understanding of precision, pattern, proportion, and craftsmanship.
By the end of the course, each participant will have completed their own parquetry piece and gained the fundamental skills, knowledge, and confidence to continue exploring and developing their practice independently.

Who is this course for?
All levels of ability and experience are welcome. You must be aged 18 or over to participate in our programmes.

Where will this course take place?
This course will take place at our studios at The King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, 19-22 Charlotte Road, London EC2A 3SG.
What should I bring to class?
All materials are provided on this course.
Wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting slightly messy. Avoid wearing baggy clothing (especially sleeves), loose jewellery, high heels or open-toed shoes.

Do you offer concessions?
Yes, we offer concessions for Seniors/60+, full-time students and people who are unemployed/in receipt of benefits.
Concessions cannot be applied in retrospect. To receive a concession, please apply via our online form. We will then send you a discount code to use when booking your space.

Tutor Biography
Shorsh Saleh is a Kurdish mixed media artist, carpet designer and weaver. His works focus on the subject of migration, border and identity. Based in the UK, he has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Saleh studied MA Traditional Arts at The King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, London, where he has been teaching since 2015. His works are held in the Royal Collection Trust, the King’s Foundation, the British Museum, the Bagri Foundation and the Islamic Art Museum, Malaysia.
