About

Introducing the ancient craft of Temari, a traditional Japanese embroidery on a spherical shape. Originated around 700 AD, Temari balls emerged as a creative way to put to use leftover materials: rice husks and silk threads from kimono making.

In this course, we will learn how to make Temari from scratch, from shaping the round base to the pattern stitching, starting with simple geometrical patterns and then moving into more complex ones. Students will understand the basic principles of Temari, the stitching methods and guidelines that give way to a vast array of geometrical designs.

Tutor Biography

Sachiyo Nishimura was born in Santiago de Chile to Japanese parents who emigrated to South America in the 1960’s. Even though she holds a Japanese passport, she has never actually lived in Japan. Nonetheless, she has been exposed to Japanese traditional culture through her parents, her mother in particular. She grew up in Santiago and studied Visual Arts (BA) there. Not long after graduation, she travelled to Europe to attend some photography courses while continuing to develop her art practice. In 2007 she moved to London to complete an MA in Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Along her art practice, she has always been developing her craft skills in origami and Temari, and in recent years she has been teaching these crafts in local workshops. She is currently based in East London with her husband and two young children.
