About
This course will be a four-day journey into a poetic and spiritual imagination of the landscape and angels inspired by the teachings and vision of Cecil Collins RA.
We will look at ancient, medieval and early renaissance representations of angels for inspiration and their relationship to sacred space, alongside the extraordinary and deeply personal angels of Cecil Collins. We shall contemplate wings and winged forms symbolising protection, movement between worlds; heaven and earth, visible and invisible, human and divine, and the mystical landscape as the very ground they are placed upon representing the space between those worlds.
Cecil Collins, RA“Angels are winged thoughts of the Divine Mind”
We shall interpret the landscape, as an imaginative reflection of our own unique poetic inner landscape. Through orientation and guided two handed drawing studies and music, working with the traditional instruments of quill and reed pens, Chinese brushes and ink, Conte red crayon, charcoal and pencils, we shall explore mark making and the imagination, and come to establishing this ‘inner landscape’ then bring a winged form to rest there.
The finished drawing will then be transferred to a gesso panel and the painting will commence with layers of translucent egg tempera and precise mark making for fine details. Some colour harmony studies from Cecil Collins teaching will also be part of the course.
