English Language Qualification

If English is not your first language and if you have not completed a degree through the medium of English in a majority English speaking country, you will be required to provide evidence of English Language in the form of a current IELTS certificate (or equivalent). For Postgraduate Research programmes, a minimum overall score of 6.5 (to include a minimum score of 6.5 in reading and writing, and a minimum score of 6.0 in speaking and listening) is required. For an MRes programme, you will need a minimum overall score of 6.0, with no less than 5.5 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Research Proposal Details

You will need to complete and submit a research proposal as a separate word document along with your supporting documentation once you have completed the online application. Your proposal should include the following sections:

1 .Proposed Title

Your title should give a clear indication of your proposed research theme and related research questions.

2. Background and Context (500 words)

In this section, you will need to:

  • Place the research topic in its historical, cultural and social context.
  • Explain why the research is significant and important.
  • Place the research in the current academic context.
  • Refer to key texts.

3. Proposed Aim (250 words)

In this section, you will need to:

  • Explain what you want to achieve through the research.
  • Outline the aims of the research

4. Proposed Objectives (250 words)

In this section, you will need to:

  • Outline the action(s) you will take in order to achieve your aim.

5. Proposed Methodology(500 words)

In this section, you will need to explain how you will achieve your aims and objectives:

  • Explain your disciplinary orientation/approach.
  • Describe the methods you will use to carry out your research e.g. library-based research, on-line research, fieldwork (interviews/participant-observation), analysis of visual data, combinations of these).
  • Reference your work using the referencing system appropriate to your discipline.

6. Contribution to the Field of Knowledge

Identify how the results of this research will impact the subject field or professional area. (250 words)

7. Indicative Bibliography

In this section, you should list an indicative bibliography relevant to your research.

  • You should include all works cited in your proposal.
