Heballah Mohamed (Metalwork)
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Heballah previously studied Applied Arts (Graphics), and came to the programme as she was keen to study craft-making in a more rigorous and structured manner. Having previously studied calligraphy, she was able to see the connection between practices of calligraphy and illumination, and also wanted to further explore floral decorative patterns. Heballah is fascinated by functionality within traditional arts. Inspired by the utilitarian value of most most art pieces and artefacts displayed in museums worldwide, she chose to create a functional object for her graduation project – a cylindrical brass box adorned with floral patterns from the Mamluk artistic language. After her graduation, Heballah plans to continue designing and making functional art pieces that incorporate traditional crafts.
